This piece draws a parallel between the perception of happiness and the essential ingredients in cooking. Salt, pepper, and sugar are considered indispensable, balancing the flavours of a dish and making it more enjoyable. However, if any of these are used excessively, the dish becomes unpalatable. Thus, for the perfect taste, these ingredients must neither be absent nor noticeable. This principle is linked to the amount of positive emotions we experience. For happiness, should happiness be consciously perceived or should it be like salt, pepper and sugar?
